I must begin by confessing I am one of the many lurkers. I have been following listserv for several months, but not participating. Over the past months, your conversations have inspired and challenged me as an educator. I have forwarded many of your post to teachers and administrator that I interact with in my district. One thing I have realized is that I have built such a respect for the participants of this group.
With that said, I now need your input on the educational challenge I am facing. Recently, I assumed the position of coordinator for a Title I school moving into a magnet International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. This truly will be a paradigm shift for the teachers presently teaching at this school. The school (and system) is very skill - textbook driven. (Did I leave out worksheets and test driven?) For me I see active literacy and listening as being the backbone for building strong inquiry. Yet I have to keep in mind my teachers aren't familiar with showing students how to track their thinking and monitor their own comprehension. My question is anyone is or has been part of an International Baccalaureate PYP school? If so, could you share how you have structured your literacy block? Are you using the reading workshop format? Could you share any success stories of how reading comprehension strategies have supported the inquiry units required by IB? Iris S. Ellington IB PYP Coordinator Northwood Elementary School 818 W.
