The Little Engine that Could is a great beginning of the year book to set an overriding goal of establishing an "I can do it attitude" in class. I follow it up with the children's version of Coach Wooden (famous UCLA basketball coach) book "Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success". The book is at school so I don't have the exact name. ----- Original Message ----- From: Mary Helen Chappetto<mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Mosaic: A Reading Comprehension Strategies Listserv<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Friday, July 18, 2008 10:45 AM Subject: [MOSAIC] goal setting theme
I am reading the posts on goal setting and was excited about the book suggestions to go along with that theme. I started to complile a list of the book suggestions made and was wondering if there are more suggestions out there? If there are, could you give a 1-2 sentences about the story? I will submit it to Mosaic and perhaps we can build it as a community resource?! BTW, I have held goal setting sessions in my classroom. I was in a charter school that held goal setting sessions about 5 weeks into the school year once we got to know the kids. It went beyond the regular Open House when you give parents general information. We were able to sit down with each family and set goals. The kids were part of it, the parents and teachers. We each signed a "contract" and we revisited the goal setting at the beginning of January when we really had deep understanding of each child and family. Last year I took a new job in CPS, closer to home. We had a PD day in October, right around the 5 week mark. I viewed the goal setting sessions as a great way to open the parent-teacher-school conversation and as a trust-building opportunity. I asked if we could use that day to meet with our parents if we chose to. The principal liked the idea and presented to the whole staff. Unfortunately the notice was short, but, parents did show up! This year we will be more organized and purposeful about how to have the conversation and how to 'measure' the outcomes.
