Hi Heather, you've come to the right place! Have you read Mosaic of Thought yet? If not, I'd like to momentarily divert you since you teach 1st grade. You should read Debbie Miller's Reading with Meaning. That book will show you what Mosaic of Thought is all about. If your school district has a copy of the video, you should watch it, too. Another book you'll want to read is Peter H. Johnston's Choice Words. It will help your language with the kids. When you do read Mosaic, I'd focus on making connections and questioning. (Now before the other members get their shorts in a knot, I'm NOT saying you shouldn't teach the other strategies) In my opinion these two strategies can't get enough empahsis when it comes to helping kids think deeper. There are so many things you can do, but the biggest one is to focus on the kids. Listen to the discussions here, go to the Mosaic Tools page if you need inspiration. Think deeply yourself, and notice what you are doing. Share this with your students. I hope this helps. Joy/NC/4 How children learn is as important as what they learn: process and content go hand in hand. _______________________________________________ Mosaic mailing list [email protected] To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org.
