I had good success too with a personal spelling book in sixth grade. We just modeled ours after Rebecca Sitton's, which you can order. Basically each page had a letter of the alphabet, with blank lines. It also had most frequently used words. Only thing I wanted to add was that having it out ALL day is the key. It has to become so routine that the kids go to it automatically. I offer to be their "dictionary" for any word the first time. Maybe I am making it too easy, but with sixth graders I think it makes it more likely they'll care about getting the spelling right because it is pretty simple to get the word checked. So they walk up with the book open to the right page and ask me how to spell a word. Sometimes I'll ask them to give it a try. But first I eyeball the words on that page to see if I have ever given that word before. The agreement is I will give you the word only once in your lifetime, haha. So they must always first check to see if this is a word they already have, and then save themselves and me some time. Pretty simple, but it worked smoothly for us. I liked all the other ideas Kim shared about using her folders. I am going to give those a try.
