Jennifer,
Linda Rief helped me with a "lending library" when I read her book Seeking
Diversity. She has a classroom library of over 600 books and handles them the
same way the "old" library system did. She puts contact paper covers on them,
sticks library card envelopes in the backs with library checkout cards inside,
alphabetizes by author's last name, and has a box to put the checkout cards in
when kids sign out the books. The kids are in charge of the library, even
collecting fees for late or lost books. Also, instead of class parties, etc.
for birthdays (she teaches 8th grade), she sends a letter at the beginning of
the school year asking parents to donate the child's favorite book to the
library in honor of that student's birthday. She even puts those fancy stickers
in the front of the book saying that the book was given by that student on that
particular occasion. She says she is explicit on the library rules, and it
works well in her classroom. I know the initial cost could be a lot (contact
paper, library cards and envelopes), but it seems that in the long run, it'd be
worth it. Hope this helps!

Subject: Re: [MOSAIC] Education Student Question

Hi I am a Reading Consultant in CT. My partner and I are trying to come up with
an idea of a "Lending Library" for the students to have access to with our own
personal books that we have brought in from home. We have a lot of them and are
trying to come up with a way for the students to borrow them and have them
returned. We have a large transient population and we are trying to make books
available for those students that have no books at home and even to those that
do. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would appreciate any ideas.
