Kim,
That's exactly what I did after I introduced the whole idea of
metacognition. Now the kids are trying it on their own and recording their
thinking using sticky notes. After a while I will let them decide if they
need to continue with using sticky notes for fiction but I require them to
continue to use them for nonfiction and to use it in their other content
area classes as well until I have enough "proof" that they are doing it on
their own and then I try to wean them away from using sticky notes towards
the end of the year.
