Kim,

Our school uses the AVID program for 5th and 6th graders. Then in Jr. High the
students are selected to be on the AVID track.

In my classroom the AVID program is embedded. I love that it introduces my 5th
graders to organizational skills, time management, note taking, and effective
study habits. Though each teacher adapts it to their needs, I use it for the
skills mentioned above. Through mini lessons at the beginning of the year, I
slowly introduce each layer. Some students have NEVER learned how to organize
their binder for all their subjects. What a great skill to teach to start the
year off right!

Regarding Thinking Maps, our WHOLE district has adopted this program. In my
classroom I have used it for the last four years and it has been great to help
my students including my English Learners. Introducing each map with enough
time given to your students to "play" with them is key. They need to see you
use it throughout your lessons. It sure replaced having to find a "graphic
organizer" the students would understand. Since they have been introduced to
it since Kinder, by the time they arrive in my classroom, I don't need to
re-teach it! That is my favorite part.

I hope that helps,
-Magaly

Do any of you work with the AVID program? I learned about it when I moved
to middle school. I truly like some of their procedures, organization, and
activities. I dislike some. If you are using it, I was wondering how you
incorporate with your curriculum.

We've been told that Thinking Maps will be required school-wide this year.
Again, I see there are some good things about them and not so good things.
If you use them, how do you incorporate them into your daily work?
