I too do guided reading groups. The students are grouped by a combo. of their DRA level and DIBELS scores. I have 4 small groups, I meet with the 2 lower groups 3 times a week and the 2 higher groups 2 times a week. I also use DSA to determine what spelling patterns I need to work on. In my lower groups, I usually have to start out with reviewing phonics and then we gradually move into decoding and fluency. On the other hand, my top group is way beyond that, so we work on harder comprehension skills like synthesizing and inferring, I also do literature studies and author studies with that group. My mid-high group- we work on an array of things from fluency to story elements, predicting, visualizing, etc. I teach 3rd grade in a very diverse school, therefore we have very diverse learners. The way I see it is that I can only meet the needs of ALL of my students through guided reading! It is a lot of work and planning in the beginning, but once you know your students as readers, what comes next, seems to get easier!
