I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend. I am hoping that any listserv members that are or have relatives in the path of Gustave are hanging in there. We are all thinking of you and you are in our thoughts. As I have been looking at the needs of my intervention kids who have difficulties with comprehension, without fail, none of them can synthesize. Synthesis is such an important strategy and I believe it can affect comprehension drastically. After all these years of teaching strategies, I am still less than comfortable with teaching synthesis and I often wait until the end of the year and then do less than a careful job of it. My question is: Does anyone out there start with synthesis? (If I start the year with it, maybe I will do a better job of it.) What ideas do you have for making this strategy more concrete for students? Jennifer
