Although there are many surveys online... I was wondering if any of you
primary teachers have a tried and true informal assessment (other than teacher,

parent, and student observation) that helps pinpoint a learning style. This
week my first grade class and I spent a long time talking about what kind of
smart each child was..... We also used Mel Levines' idea of demystification to
help kids be perceptive as well as understand the mode in which they best
receive information to their brains. I modeled with self-talk and what I know
to be true (strengths and weakness about myself as a learner) and how I plan
to use this knowledge. We then talked about the strengths we noticed of our
classmates. This kind of talk really puts to rest... at the get-go... the
smirks and wonders about kids who have obvious deficits or extreme strengths.
As
the ultimate equalizer.... children begin the metacognitive process and
consider improvement as self progress rather than the use of "NORMS." It also
makes that sticky part of the DRA assessment (leveled materials) be seen as
only
one part of our reading abilities.
