Felicia, I would say we started readers workshop about 8-9 years ago.... about the time we started our relationship with Columbia. We weren't really their satellite school until a bit later... and as of last year.... we did not renew that part of our contract with Columbia.... mostly because of financial changes in our infrastructure... though... many mentors from Columbia still visited us during the year. Before the TC concept of reader's workshop we had a loose literature approach using Ginn's Literature Works program. .. basically I am a four block fan.... I do not think the materials make the program.... I still use Literature works as well as guided readers and scholastic news and trade books and poems and you name it. I think it is how you structure your workshop that counts...... minilesson... group practice.... independent practice... share...Lucy Calkins said it best.... keep the workshop structured with consistent ordinary routines so the extraordinary can happen! May I ask why your distridt abandoned the approach in kindergarten? Reader's Workshop is so freeing and yet keeps student and teacher accountable. I am so happy to be done with work boards as Fountas and Pinnell advises... I am more for work that centers around real reading: lit groups, interest books, independent reading, buddy reading, listening to tapes., reaeding the room.... just reading, reading, reading rather than skill and drill made to look like some interactive game....... anyway, good luck to you and your district.... Hi Pam, I teach in Wayne NJ where for the past 10 years we have used a reading program from HM called Invitations to Literacy. It is a basal reader that comes with different skills each week and a workbook. I've read a lot about reader's workshop and this year some teachers in my district are piloting a program from Rigby called Literacy by Design. It's more of a reader's workshop approach and a colleague of mine is one of the piloting teachers and she's loving it. I just picked up NJ Monthly where they rated Milburn HS number one (Bravo for your school district). I was wondering if you knew how long your district has used reader's workshop and how long they've had their relationship with teacher's college. The district has already abandoned the workshop approach in kindergarten and I don't want them to do it in the elementary grades without giving it a fair shake. I hoping to convince them with the information you give me to give it a try. Thanks in advance for your time.
