Right away, two things come to mind.

First, get copies of Debbie Miller's two books and read them. Or read
Sharon Taberski's On Solid Ground. Or read Kathy Collins' two books. Or,
Regie Routman's Reading Essentials. Or Fountas and Pinnell's guided reading
book.

During the time you're reading whatever you choose, ask your principal to
approve professional leave to visit another second grade classroom. Use
your network to find out where would be a great place to go, visit, immerse
yourself, and see if you can establish a mentoring situation where you two
help each other.

Then see if your district has professional media you can check out and
view. Often the central office has things available, but the word never
gets out there, so you might be in for a nice surprise.

Last, I think I might change my first book recommendation to Linda Dorn and
Carla Soffos' Teaching for Deep Comprehension. That is a fantastic basic
book that might give you encouragement and a real boost right now!!

Good luck!
