We have switched classes in the past based on ability groups. It operated very much the same way as you described, however, the groups would change very often. The grouping is very flexible. We would spend a couple of weeks with the groups, then meet as a team to see how all of the students are doing. We would shuffle the groups according to need.
It worked very, very well. In fact, my co-teacher and I got it down to a science where the students could actually switch groups in the middle of class. Confusing, I know, but it made sense for us and the kids we had. Good luck.
