I would be interested to hear about a school where Reading Mastery or DI is the
whole reading curriculum...that is not (IMO) an appropriate use of those
programs. I have used both for intervention for students who do not have
success with what we are doing in the classroom for decoding. Some students
simply need another approach.
We are also implementing Literacy By Design. I know others on list have had
favorable opinions of this program; I really don't understand why. Yes, it is
"centered" on comprehension strategies, but the scripts are surface level and
assume much. The assessments are junk. Most selections are NOT rich
literature or compelling nonfiction...that is why, I think, Joanne's students
are losing enthusiasm for reading. Let's put it this way...used the Rigby for
awhile...questioning strategy...then pulled out Fly Away Home. My kids went
from being disengaged to saying things like, "That's one of the best books I've
ever heard." Text matters.
Anytime a program becomes the curriculum, it's wrong. Period.
