Our district is now using the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment Kits. 
These kits are 
thorough and assess students reading comprehension on three levels (within, 
beyond and 
about text). I have yet to see any assessment that thoroughly assesses students 
on 'about 
text', dealing with authors purpose and authors craft. You can learn  more
