Try 1. Writing generic high level plot and character questions and put in a basket and have group members take turns pulling one out and reading to the group. Tape record them while you're with another group. Never failed to improve the book talk because the seriousness of their attitude rose with the presence of a microphone.
2. Do you teach levels of questions? I would do After the Lunch Bunch and I provided a dessert. To be invited (it did happen during class) you needed to submit three Level 2 or 3 questions. We worked on this a lot so they had stems to get them going.
