Oh yes yes yes, reading aloud chapter books like the classics is beneficial
to children.  I am not sure what you mean by beneficial to comprehensive
testing, but reading aloud sustained text such as longer chapter books is a
great way to focus on comprehension skills and listening skills.  My
students LOVE chapter book read aloud time (I teach fifth grade now, but
have read aloud to K, 1, 2 and 3 graders and they all look forward to it).
Chapter books allow for such rich discussions and if you plan and think
things through well, the enrichment carries over into independent reading,
guided reading and writing as well.  I can't give enough testimonial...this
is time very well spent.
