Hi, I think CRISS is a wonderful program, especially to help content teachers understand why it is so important to teach reading strategies. There are some explanations of this report on the CRISS web site--one is from Carol Santa who explains, if I remember correctly, that CRISS is meant to be a long term intervention. Also, some of the people in the study did not even receive CRISS training as it is proposed! So, the results are definitely suspect. I know this web site is dedicated to comprehension stratgeies...but I think we can't ignore the effects of politics on pedagogy...What do teachers think about project CRISS? Florida DOE has this to say...I guess these interventions didn't teach to the test! I think project CRISS is one of the best training programs for teacher comprhension strategy interventions...I've never used Success for All but I think they were involved in the termoil about "Reading First Schools having to choose DIBLES to receive Reading First money".? Some Supplementary Reading Programs Found Ineffective The recent report from The National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance (NCEE), entitled Effectiveness of Selected Supplemental Reading Comprehension Interventions: Impacts on a First Cohort of Fifth-Grade Students, found that the impacts on student achievement for four supplemental reading curricula that use similar overlapping instructional strategies designed to improve reading comprehension in social studies and science text. Fifth-grade reading comprehension for each of three commercially-available curricula (Project CRISS, ReadAbout, and Read for Real) was not significantly different from the control group. The fourth curriculum, Reading for Knowledge, was adapted from Success for All for this study, and had a statistically-significant negative impact on fifth-grade reading comprehension. You can click above on the report title for the report. An executive summary is also available. -----Original Message----- From: plongshell <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Tue, Jul 14, 2009 1:06 pm Subject: Re: [MOSAIC] leveled reading curric/middle school P? Philomena- I see that some people are suggesting the Fountas/Pinnel benchmark system for you. If I understood your questions, you are looking for a reading curriculum to use with different content areas for middle school interventions. The Fountas and Pinnel is an assessment tool, not a reading program. I work with middle schoolers at the moment and have used Options books-they're pretty good. Jamestown Publishing puts out many different content area books that the kids find interesting and seem to enjoy.? The F&P benchmark assessment system kind of peters out after 6th grade, because most kids are reading at the upper limits of testing. Also, my colleagues and I have found that the leveling for books after P or Q gets a little dicey. The vocabulary and sentence length might lead to a lower level than the overall gist of the reading. Or the reverse happens! A through Z leveling does not seem to work well in middle school, the topics covered and the concepts presented are more important to take into consideration with your age and skill level groups.?
