Children need to be taught what they need to learn in order to become more
strategic and effective readers. Why? So that they enjoy reading, choose to
read on their own, and comprehend what they're reading or know what to do when
comprehension breaks down. For some kids, this means work on phonics. So,the
answer to your question? It depends on the individual child's needs. To be
honest, I'm not sure why this is even up for a debate anymore.

Hello All,

I'm a second grade school teacher.  Throughout my time in school the great
phonics controversy has popped up more than once.  I would like your take on
the topic.  Do all children need to be taught phonics?  Why or why not?

Thank you,

2nd grade School Teacher
