Hi Karen,

In the beginning of the year, my school groups children based on their DRA
(Developmental Reading Assessment) levels. We assess all our children right in
the beginning of the year, when we are setting up reader's workshop. We use the
DRA as our assessment tool because of the running record and the comprehension
portions. However, the running record portion is what we use the most, we
analyze each error with MSV (meaning, structure, and visual) cues that the
child is using or lacking and then place them in groups based on what
strategies they need work.

Hello Everyone,

I am preparing for the upcoming school year.  I was wondering,
in the beginning of the year how do you place students into reading
groups?   Do you look at the previous years? test scores?  Or do you
just place them based on  teacher observation?

Thank you,
Karen
