Hello ,

I am currently finishing my last class before I begin my student teaching this
fall. During my pre-student teaching my cooperating teacher used reading
workshops, which I plan on using in the future. Although I like the idea of
reading workshops, I found it difficult to know how well the students were
understanding what they read, especially with books I was unfamiliar with. I
would discuss what they have read with certain students but found that it
didn't really give me a good idea of their comprehension. While I have learned
about workshops for the last couple of years I have only witnessed it in the
classroom for a long period of time once. I was wondering how teachers monitor
what their students are reading during this time? With students bringing books
from home, checking out from the library, or selecting from a classroom library
I feel that students can tell me anything about what they have just read
because I personally have not read the books. Any tips or suggestions to help
me understand how the students are progressing throughout the year?
