I am planning on starting guided reading in fifth grade this year as well. From suggestions from the list, I have purchased the Fountas and Pinnell book and it has great resources for starting the reader's workshop, which is the format I plan to use. Last year, my kids did a lot of indpendent reading and were begging for "SSR" time. I do take one day a week to model reading independently, instead of conferencing with kids and they do seem to read better on those days, especially the "fake" readers.
