I pick my partnerships. I watch the children for a while and see for myself who 
I think should be paired together. I don't even consider letting the children 
pick their own. It can just cause too much drama. It's easier to pair them up 
myself, and they have no problems with that because we set the tone in the 
beginning that everyone works together in our classroom. We are all here to 
help 
each other.

I teach fourth grade with the Workshop model.  I choose the Response Partners 
based on student input.  I have them respond to four questions and write the 
names on an index card.
1.  Who is someone you could work with?
2.  Who is someone you don't know well but you might like to work with?
3. Who is someone you would probably goof off with?
4.  Who is someone you would not work well with?

Then I pair the students up based on this input. I often keep them together for 
at least half the year.  It has worked well for me, and the students build 
trusting relationships.
