I also used talking stones in my literature circles when I taught 5th grade.

The students really enjoyed it, and it does encourage other students to
speak up. In fact those who were hesitant to take part in the discussions
became some of the first to offer input. I purchased the colored stones
that can be put in flower arrangements. I placed enough stones for each
student at the table in a basket in the middle of the table. When it was
discussion time, the students each took out 3 stones. Fifth graders still
loved stories, so I made up a story about where the stone came from and why
they were so special. We even incorporated that into a creative writing
lesson with the students making up their own story about the origin of the
speaking stones. We also were eventually able to wean students off the
stones, but they frequently would ask to use them again.

I also use "talking chips." Everyone has to use two chips at each circle. We
get weaned off of them after a few meetings, but then often go back to them
when we stop hearing from someone or when we hear too much from just a few.

>>> My class is doing literature circles and we are having trouble
sharing "air time". Everyone wants to talk and not listen to others.
Does anyone have have any picture book suggestions to promote the art of
listening to what others have to say? Any help would be appreciated. (I
have used The Conversation Club). Need others.
