In response to Leveled Literacy Intervention, I want to share a few experiences
with the Orange and Blue LLI kits we are using this year for the first time. I
am very pleased to have an intervention system that has been piloted by over
600 teachers, created by Fountas and Pinnell who have a Reading Recovery
background and understand the work of Marie Clay. We choose LLI because of the
emphasis on REAL Reading, Real Writing, and embedded phonics and work work.
All the components of Phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary
instruction are in EVERY LESSON. The reciprocity of reading and writing is
developed and kids are accelerating as HAPPY readers and writers.
We are using LLI in K, first and second grade. We also have one group of third
graders. We also have Reading Recovery in our district for the first graders
who need a more intensive intervention for 12-20 weeks. LLI is a good match
with Reading Recovery in our district and kids are ENJOYING READING. They
read, write, and take home familiar books that they have enjoyed in their
lessons.
Our LLI teachers are certified teachers who are working together with their
Reading Recovery specialist in the building to make instructional decisions,
select and exit students, and monitor on-going needs in our buildings. I
highly recommend you go to the LLI website and read the "articles" on the BLOG
for massive amounts of great questions and answers from F and P. I hope as you
look at interventions for your districts you look carefully at programs with
only one isolated focus or skill versus a program that includes engaging books
for kids who need to see that reading and writing have a purpose, are
enjoyable, and help you connect.....to so many people and places!
Warmly,
Shari Moore
