We just adopted a leveled text program, and our students are making great
progress. The program is called Benchmark, and it is a MONDO publication (small
company based in NYC). Additionally, the company provides outstanding
professional development as part of the program, and they are outstanding to
work with. Look them up online.

Subject: [MOSAIC] Reading textbook suggestions

My school is looking at updating the current reading textbook that we have
(HM), there are 3 of us on staff (out of 7) that don't use the book now and
would rather use the money to buy more books for our limited book room. For
some of our staff I understand they are uncomfortable teaching reading with out
a textbook with lesson plans, it does take more work. So my question for you
all is those of you that have to use a textbook any suggestions as to ones we
should look at, any we should avoid? Does anyone use the Great Source Day
Books or the Reader's Handbook instead of a textbook series? These sounded
like they would easily fit in to use as mini lessons for Readers workshop.

I am also looking for information on Spelling (1-6) and Phonics (k-2 use
phonics), if we go with a book that doesn't have spelling and phonics with it
we will have to get separate materials. Any suggestions of programs out there?
In the upper grades we have a spelling book but we (5-6) would love to look
into something different we have (HM older series before 2000 I think).

I suppose it would help to tell you we are a K-6 school with one class of each
and about 88 students.

Any information would be appreciated

Thanks
