GREAT question! I am also a Title teacher and would love to hear what other
districts do for their parent meetings. Here are just a few of the ideas we
have done for our k-6 building:

- pajama night meeting: ppt show showing coaching strategies for parents to
help their struggling readers at home, while the students were in the gym
with high school student volunteers and an adult doing various book
activities; we all then met back in the gym for a snack and door prizes

- Dr. Seuss night: parent and students met in the gym with silly hats,
shared quotes about reading (with music) in a ppt show on the big screen as
families arrived; we had a few student groups perform poems or Reader's
Theater, read aloud Horton Hears a Who with the illustrations on the big
screen; ended with snacks and door prizes
   - We have had similar evenings with other authors (Robert Munsch, Jan
Brett) - they have great web sites for resources

- had a parent luncheon (soups, fruit, rolls), shared the Parent Policy,
discussed any questions and/or concerns, visited - some parents were
surprised (disappointed) that their child did not get to come and eat lunch
with them at our parent meeting, as our events had always included the
children because they were in the evening...

Polar Express night: chair were organized in a train; students were given
train tickets for admittance (later used for prize drawings); a teacher
volunteer was the train conductor; we served hot chocolate on the train as
we listened to and watched the book as a ppt show. Closed the evening with
prize drawings.

I would love to hear other ideas as ours are getting repetitive and we are
having a difficult time coordinating events for the students, while we also
meet with the parents.

Thanks,
- Sue
