I also use the story Dear Juno for my 2nd graders. Also, I do a read aloud of Henry Huggins or Henry and Ribsy, the kids all know about dogs and how to tell what a dog is feeling by looking at his tail, ears and head-so it's a natural process for them. (I teach in a neighborhood where EVERYONE has a dog)
