google Katherine (I think - my book isn't handy here at home) Noe Literature Circle ....it's her response guides. They have another book with good chapters by various teachers. It's good too but not the one I mean. There are three other authors, campbell and Hill??? . This book is an awesome resource, half great response blackline masters for using with lit circles approaches - wide range, huge variety, excellent quality, for reading logs, project rubrics etc. etc. Really really thoughtful and good. Second half is all bibliography of excellent books by theme and by subject (for middle school, eg. history focused etc.) It's aimed at 5 - 8 approx. Each section has picture books for older readers, easy chapter books and more challenging chapter books. Comes with a CD too with all the book references but also the blackline masters. It is one of the best resources I've ever used for planning curriculum....lit circles, study groups etc. allows me to differentiate instruction effectively with quality..... Perhaps a little dated but the bibliographies have many of my favorites which will still be relevant.
I am not entirely sure it is in print but recommend everyone buy used copies if nothing else!!! The upper grade kids like to read the chapter books more than the short reading texts. I have been struggling with the content covered in the higher reading levels, (I get nervous reading Among the Hidden but they love it) The 6th grade teacher and I are also working on pulling together some texts to use as genre studies. I am having trouble thinking of some books for my low level students (M/N) for Mystery, historical fiction, and realistic fiction and fantasy any suggestions would be great. I've been spoiled this year with a class of high levels and am a little concerned that I will meet the needs of my low readers. Are you looking for guided reading or lit circles? We found those high readers to be particularly troublesome because of the maturity level of the higher level texts. We tried using the classics as often as possible to avoid censorship problems.
