Hi Karen-
Our district adopted Words Their Way this past school year. It took a while to
get the program up and running. We were lucky to have a teacher in our building
who had used it before and could guide us as we began using it. I had three
groups in my fifth grade room. One in mid level D, one at the beginning of E
and one in the middle of E. These groups were put together based on the
assessment data from the WTW test. As a building we decided it best not to have
students working more than one level down or up from the one for their grade
level. Here is my schedule for the week for each group:
Monday - Introduce words in groups (students have them cut and ready to sort)
Homework - speed sort at home
Tuesday - Speed sort on Promethean board in groups - review rules and set up
columns for sort.
Homework - No peek sort
Wednesday - Workbook page
Thursday - Game day in room at Promethean Board
Homework Cover-Copy-Write in cursive
Friday - Assessment

I used literacy time for the groups - about 10 - 15 minutes on Monday, Tuesday
and Thursday for activities.
We have a 90 minute literacy block, so while I worked with one group other
students were working on other literacy activites including self-selected,
partner reading and mini-lesson work.
