We use DRA2 and do not retest in the fall except for new students or special circumstances such as possible retention with summer school attendance. When we did test in the fall, we waited at least 3 weeks so that community could be built and students had eased back into the routine. Then we give the DRA in December and again late in the school year. We give the SRI in the fall, winter and spring to 3-5 and DIBELS to kindergarten. Again, we wait about 3 weeks before testing. We have personal narrative writing prompts with rubrics that we use in the fall and again in the spring, but I'm sure there must be something better out there.
