Our school is made up of mostly ESL students. Some things I do in my
classroom (4th grade) are:
*use pictures for ALL vocabulary words
*use realia whenever possible (bring in real world samples kids can hold,
touch, and enjoy)
*our reading program comes w/CDs that have the stories on them. Allow the
ESL students to listen to the story on Friday (or the day before you
introduce the story to everyone else). This will give them some background
knowledge and they will feel more comfortable in responding/participating
when they know something that their peers do not know.
*lots and lots of writing across contents. Challenge them to tell you what
they know in writing.
*use turn and talk. ESL students tend to be more afraid to participate.
One way to create a safe environment is to pose a question to the class and
allow them to turn and talk to a partner. ESL students then get a chance to
rehearse and think about their response. They will then be more likely to
respond in front of the whole group.
*google ESL or ELL strategies. There are a ton of them! While you may only
have a couple of ESL students, these strategies are good for all learners.

Hope this helps!
Bianca

Subject: [MOSAIC] ESL students

Hello Everyone,
I have been reading this list serve for many years and would like to ask for
some help.  I teach a self-contained inclusive third grade classroom.
Next year I will have two ELS students in my class.  We seldom have students
who do not speak English as their first language in our rural Ohio school.
I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for teaching reading/writing or
some good resources that I could purchase to read over the summer?
Thanks,
Brenda
