Our school is made up of mostly ESL students. Some things I do in my classroom (4th grade) are: *use pictures for ALL vocabulary words *use realia whenever possible (bring in real world samples kids can hold, touch, and enjoy) *our reading program comes w/CDs that have the stories on them. Allow the ESL students to listen to the story on Friday (or the day before you introduce the story to everyone else). This will give them some background knowledge and they will feel more comfortable in responding/participating when they know something that their peers do not know. *lots and lots of writing across contents. Challenge them to tell you what they know in writing. *use turn and talk. ESL students tend to be more afraid to participate. One way to create a safe environment is to pose a question to the class and allow them to turn and talk to a partner. ESL students then get a chance to rehearse and think about their response. They will then be more likely to respond in front of the whole group. *google ESL or ELL strategies. There are a ton of them! While you may only have a couple of ESL students, these strategies are good for all learners.
