I regret to inform everyone that we have returned to emergency moderation.

This is due to the large volume of email being sent in regards to
conversations/threads on the "Book Whisperer" chat.

In the last week we've seen a huge increase in list traffic which has caused
the big providers like Yahoo, AOL, and HotMail/MSN to take notice. HotMail
and MSN have decided to block all of our list messages. This is because to
their computers/filters we look like we are sending spam. We've had about
150 HotMail/MSN members disabled due to this problem in the last 36 hours.
Unfortunately they won't get any messages from our server about this
problem.

Emergency Moderation will allow me to release messages more gradually and
also reject messages that might be best sent to a person and not 3000
members.

I would ask everyone to make sure that messages that you send to the list
are "advancing the conversation". Terse comments such as "Yes", "I agree",
or "what do you teach?", etc. will be rejected by me.

If you send to the list you will see a returned message that your post is
awaiting moderation approval. Please do NOT resend the message. The server
got your message and needs me to click on the "approve" box first. Resending
the message might make me cranky; however the server will just put it in the
queue along with the same message you sent earlier.

I have to approve EVERY post and it might be 12+ hours before you see your
message posted. If I reject your message you will also see this returned to
you with a short reason why it was rejected.

I want to also remind you that Mosaic and The Literacy Workshop are not huge
corporations. It's basically me and a few other educators that are
volunteering our time to make this list work. Most of us have at least one
other full time job. There are no corporate offices, sales teams, business
and marketing professionals, administrative assistants, and IP staff.

So things are likely to slow up on the list due to the issue above. We will
get to things as soon as we can so please be patient. Once we end the book
chat we hope to turn off moderation.

In the future we will host book chats on separate lists so that we can
minimize arousing suspicions of the big providers and their computers (this
has been done in the past). We considered this option for "The Book
Whisperer" conversation, but decided against this because in the past our
members have indicated a preference for keeping book chats on the main list.
As you can see, this has created a short term problem.

Should you need help for any problem or question, please contact me
off-list.

Thanks,

Keith Mack
