Some of my favorite titles for fourth grade level are: Family Under the
Bridge, The Gold Cadillac, The Friendship, Nora Ryan's Song, Sign of the
Beaver, Yang the Youngest and His Terrible Ear and Yolando's Genius. Fifth
grade level: Bud,Not Buddy, Esperanza Rising, Dragonwings, Sing Down the
Moon, In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson, Letters From Ritka, Julie
of the Wolves, Lily's Crossing, War Comes To Willy Freeman...so many good
ones it's hard to stop! Great theme genalizations to go along with these
books are: overcoming challenges, justice and injustice, persevering against
all odds...I have found that my students can relate their experiences from
their own lives easier with theme generalizations. For Example, "What
Carries Us Through Hardships?"...Who supported you through hard times?...
What did you need to survive it?...How did you make it through something
difficult in your life?...some very serious book club discussions can result
from thought provoking themes such as these.

Subject: [MOSAIC] BOOK RECOMMENDATION

Hi Everyone,
I am compiling a list of reading books with multicultural themes to be used
to motivate all readers and also make students more aware of the diversity
that exist in their communities; the grade levels are 4th and 5th. I think
it is great to have a list of great reading books from which to choose in
order to encourage reading among diverse groups of students. I welcome your
suggestions, thanks in advance.
