This is the only email I have received from either group this week. I am supposed to be registered for the Book Discussion and cannot find any information about it other than the confirmation email that I am registered.
I purchased the book and have been watching for the discussion off & on since 5:30 this morning. I am new to the Mosaic list serv as well so I do not know the protocol. I've tried to find info on the website after I finally relocated it. The only links in the emails are to sign up or change membership. Please advise. I'd like to take this slowly and really try to push each other as we deepen our thinking about inquiry. I will open a new discussion each Saturday and we will then discuss and respond to each other's ideas. I want to start with an introduction of who we are and what has drawn us to this group. This week, please read the introduction and Chapter 1 of the book. I will post some discussion questions shortly, but in the meantime I'd like to begin creating our online community. I'd like to remind us all to refrain from sending "me too", or "I agree" type messages. The best way for us to grow in our practice is to move beyond those types of responses. ---- My name is Laura Kump. I am the owner of the Readinglady.com website. I am a National Board Certified teacher currently working as a Literacy Coach in a K - 5 school located on Staten Island, NY. I have taught at the elementary level for 15 years, and have also taught at the college level. I have been trying for the past 2 years to revamp my school's literacy curriculum. We were a Teachers College school, but I felt that we needed to raise our levels of instruction. I read E.D. Hirsch's book - The Knowledge Defecit and truly felt that this was a major issue. I have been working in a comprehension study group through my network and we are trying to embed inquiry and content into our literacy units. It has not been an easy road. Some of my teachers were excited about the idea of moving toward this type of instruction. Others were less excited about reworking the curriculum yet again. Now with the release of the Common Core State Standards I feel we are definitely on the right path. In June I attended two days of professional development. The book we used and studied was Harvey Daniels and Stehanie Harvey's. As I sat there and viewed the video clips and read the text I was so excited. I felt like I finally had something my teachers and I could wrap my mind around. I look forward to revisiting this text with all of you. I know you will push me to new levels of understanding, and help me create a new plan of action. I look forward to working with you all.
