In our middle-school building, teaching "Reading" had formerly been the
domain of the homeroom teacher. Within a typical day, a sixth-grade teacher
taught four periods of one content area (e.g., science, math, social studies
or language arts) and a fifth period of Reading.

This year, in response to mounting pressures to place literacy squarely on
the map, our district has hired a literacy-certified educator to teach five
periods of Reading every day. Now that we have a dedicated Reading teacher,
we'd like to find a way to track our students' proficiencies in Reading
throughout the year rather than rely on an annual state assessment.

Our district uses the DRA for lower elementary and the QRI (some call it the
IRI) for upper-elementary grades. Administering the QRI to 125 students
would be far too labor intensive, eating up too much instructional time.

Would anyone know of a Reading/Language Arts common assessment for 6th grade
students which has met rigorous research standards and is a fair measure of
students' capabilities?

Thanks,

Stacey McDonald
