You could do a mystery "theme".  There is the Third Grade Detectives series by 
George Stanley.  There are a LOT of other mysteries on a 3/4 grade reading 
level.  You could do secret codes, finger printing, observation skills (show a 
picture with a lot of details for a minute or 2 have them write down everything 
they see, take it away and see if they can answer specific questions).

  Any suggestions for a summer reading writing unit(s).  I will be teaching
a summer course for 3/4 graders.  I would like to use the reading writing
