Thanks for the suggestion of the REWARDS program. Just to
clarify....we are not looking to imbed a program into the curriculum --
we are targeting specific groups of students based on data so we can
meet the needs a specific groups of students.

I second the Rewards kudos. I hesitated to reply as Judy did, as I don't
use
it as a 'phonics' program, as Michelle asked. When students have
particular areas of need, I'll target those with speed drills or sorts
as
well as word work. I have had great success with my middle school
students and Rewards and am looking forward to seeing how the growth
transfers when we do the last round of Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark
Assessments.

Personally I prefer REWARDS for older readers. - It is published by
Sopris
West, same people who put out STEP UP TO WRITING - an incredible program
for
explicitly teaching writing process and text structure. I have had a lot
of
success with REWARDS, especially for middle school readers.

I need some advice and suggestions.....

Is anyone familiar with (or is using) the WILSON Just Words Program?
http://www.wilsonlanguage.com/FS_PROGRAM_WRS.htm It is a decoding and
spelling program for 4th -13 graders. We are looking for a remediation
program for our middle school students who have gaps in their phonics
knowledge that is impacting their ability to comprehend. I would
appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you.

I hope many of you do not mind me asking an off-topic question. I am
retiring this year after 35 wonderful years of teaching. Over the years
I have collected many (100++) professional books. One of my goals for

When I retired I sold hundreds of professional books and children's
books through the Yahoo group... teachersbargainbasement.com. Besides
getting back some of the money that I had spent, it was gratifying to
"send them off to good homes."

Enjoy your retirement!

I strive for the top 220 by the end of second grade. Most kids can
master
them; I only miss a few each year. There are a couple good websites for
games and pre-made flash cards. I do them in frequency order, not
Primer,
pre-primer, etc. That usage data is too old (late 1940s pre-basal series
anthologies)

I am looking for an approximate number of dolch words a student in
grades
1-4 should have in their vocabulary. I know Rasinski has done much
research
in this area. Just looking for an extra criteria when cross reference
text
levels and students in need for extra intervention. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

My district is rolling out Common Core math K-2 next year, with 3-6
later. The Arizona State DOE isn't unpacking Language Arts Common Core
Standards until the 1st of June, and school's out on the 3rd. So, my
guess is that the District will roll those out K-3 next year.

Aloha from Maui, Hawai'i! ?Our state is implementing Common Core for k-2
this coming year and 3-5 to follow in about two years, I think. ?
BTW...what do you all think about Common Core? ?Personally, I like it.
?It is more specific than what we, presently, have.

Hey Cathy!
I am doing the same thing. I have my own Early Childhood library, and
it
sounds like you do, too. I have sold some on Teacher's Bargain
Basement.
I am really not interested in making money, I just want to get them to
someone who will use them.
Amazon.com will buy some of them back. I have one that I am sending
them
this week. They then sell them as used books.
Isn't it weird to be retiring? It is for me!

Hi,
I'd like to know if anyone can recommend a resource that has a reading
development continuum and/or a writing development continuum. These
would
be continuums that define stages of reading/writing development and
provide
specifc descriptors of what a child can do at these stages.

Thank you,

Mary

Check out Fountas and Pinnell. You can find their books on the Heinemann
website. They have a book specifically concerning reading and writing
continuums.

Hope this helps. This is my first time ever responding.

Hi,
I'd like to know if anyone can recommend a resource that has a reading
development continuum and/or a writing development continuum. These
would
be continuums that define stages of reading/writing development and
provide
specifc descriptors of what a child can do at these stages.

Thank you,

Mary

I have that book, but the continuums are a little different from what
I'm
looking for. I'd like to find a continuum that could be shared with
parents...here is the approximate stage where your child is
reading...here
is what her reading and writing is like in this stage...show examples of
student performance to relate to the descriptors.
Just curious, how do you use the F & P continuums?

Thanks,
Mary

I, too have used REWARDS for middle school kids who can read 2nd grade
material but not 4th. ?but our district is now telling us to use a new
program, Phonics Boost and Blitz from Really Great Reading Company.
?Boost is for those who need more and Blitz is for mild decoding needs.
?We don't know much more than that.they are using 6th Grade DIBELS
accuracy scores of 97% or lower as the indicator that a child needs
phonic intervention. We have so many kids that qualify based on that that
kids who need comprehension support won't be getting any until 2nd
semester. ?

Have any of you used DIBELS with older students? ?
?
Alice?

Mary,

First Steps out of Western Australia had great parent resources. I
don't know if that is still published in this country and whether it
has been changed over the years. The parent resource had just the
sort of description you are looking for. There were also suggestions
for parents about what they could do to support their child's
literacy development at each stage. In fact, the curriculum had a
whole book called Parents as Partners.

If you can't find these materials, I may have a print copy of some of
the parent materials and could copy and mail it to you if you send me
your address off the list.

I second Mary's request for information concerning the actual use of F
& P's continuums. I would appreciate any real research to practice
advice on this. So far, I honestly have not found their continuums as
helpful as claimed and think I must be missing something as they are
referred to all the time both on this listserve and in the literature.
Thank- you.

Have you explored the Fountas & Pinnell Continuum for Literacy Learning?
Our
District is using it as a guide along with their Prompting Guides.

The other one that is really good is First Steps.
