Justin was asking how I got the Haiti project started...Have you ever had a
moment in your class when learning veered all for the right reasons.  Actually
I
think after the earthquake I read the book to the kids and then showed the
video.  Then, as children can do, they were inspired and asked how they could
help Haiti.  This lead to researching groups such as Red Cross, World Vision,
etc to see the best group to give money to and researching Haiti.  This lead to
writing news broadcasts which we taped and shared.  One of the students
suggested collecting coins for Haiti which the principal ok'd and the VP took
an
active role.  We called it "Change for a change" and the race was on.  They
made
necklaces with the art teacher and sold them at the neighborhood food
fest. Money had to be sorted and counted.  It was amazing!  And that's how it
happens.  Relay for Life wasn't as exciting, different group of kids, but they
made signs and sold small things from home..old toys, books, etc.  Sorry for
the
length of this response!
