Interesting comments about silent reading time, or quiet reading... how do we
know if students are 'really' reading... the whole purpose of silent reading is
built on a strong belief that time + a good book of one's personal choice +
quiet space = something magical. The experience of having that time and space
and quiet to enjoy a book leads to reading and books becoming a part of one's
real life, not just school life. It isn't 'sad' to re-read a book, the point is
to help children relax and stay with a book for a while, a little while,
perhaps 5 minutes and with time a bit more. Getting up and wandering about
because one is 'done' damages the atmosphere of finding peace in a book. And
then perhaps, if we, as a community of readers are so inspired, we may spend a
few minutes informally sharing with each other what we are reading.

This just makes me need to go find a book and a corner and a quiet moment to
enjoy.

Well, what do the kids in that particular class need?
I don't believe there is one right way.

What, in your opinion, would be "correct format" ?

Choral readings, Reader's Theatre, Poetry for two voices, a reread to
another student or students, a rereading for a purpose, NOT just because I'm
killing time!
