Per the ongoing dialogue about tools for assessing both for identifying
and for informing instruction response to intervention. I highly
recommend that you spend some time reading Richard Allington¹s book on RTI
or his articles.

And Peter Johnston¹s work. Both are highly respected literacy educators who
see the possibilities of RTI but also the cautions or problems. Johnston¹s
article, which you can find below, discusses the assessments in light of two
very different perspectives on RTI.

This is a website for a global conversation with Peter Johnston on October
30th at 7:00. I will be listening to that. But if you scroll down it
provides links to some articles by Johnston. Of course, in particular, the
two on RTI. They are actually roughly the same they are two versions of
the same. It¹s a challenging read but one that I think we all need to
digest before we make up our minds about approaches and/or assessments. I
value anything by Johnston. Remember he is also the author of Choice Words
which has been discussed on this list in the past.

Everytime I hear discussion about which assessments/tests are best to use, I
want to boom out.....remember that NO SINGLE ASSESSMENT from whatever
theory or perspective or whatever......is sacred or right or ???
Even if it¹s what I might call more ³authentic² (for example the TCC
assessments or DRA or my own miscue analyses), it¹s still just one
assessment at one time. It¹s not ³objective² or true by itself. This is
the same for runningrecords/miscue or whatever. What we need are multiple
measures (and that doesn¹t mean just multiple administrations of the same
test.) and we then need to look for patterns, not single numbers or
conclusions. We need to look for patterns of meaning across time. The
search for magic assessment may be useless. It may also be counter
productive!

I would be very interested in a follow up discussion on this list serve with
any who read the Johnston article. Could be very fruitful I think.

Sally
