Dear Mosaic,

Also as a new teacher, I'm covering for a teacher on maternity leave who is
also pretty new to the profession. Between us we have a classroom library
of about 100 books. I catalogued them to be sure there was no confusion
when she comes back over who owns what. It wasn't as much work as it sounds
like, because I used this app with my smart phone:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.metosphere.book&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5tZXRvc3BoZXJlLmJvb2siXQ
..

It doesn't have every single piece of data about books, and some of the
Book Club books weren't found by scanning. But it was easy to use and had
most of the books in there. I think it's a great way to keep track of what
books you have in your library. If you're running an iPad classroom or want
to make your library easier to track, I'm sure there's a way to create
barcodes for your books and keep a dynamic database running. There's a lot
of work upfront, especially if you have a big library, but once the initial
set-up is over the maintenance shouldn't be too much. Older students could
even participate in labelling new additions to the library, not to mention
taking responsibility for book-borrowing, -tracking, and -returning.

I'm planning to set up the barcodes and database this summer, while my
library is still puny. :) I promise I'll send an update to the list and
instructions on that too.

Meghan
