I agree with all the suggestions here. I admit I was amazed to see you are working on reading that directly at that age -- Reading Recovery in our district only worked with first grade students. And just to note -- Better Late Than Early is I think the book (now old) that documents how later programs (Denmark? other Scandinavian countries?) did not have nearly the same degree of early reading difficulties. (Sorry but don't make me go look it up. :-) )
In our district there's been a real push-pull as to early phonics etc. The recent move to full day kindergarten (BC, Canada) brought forth the provincial curriculum document from the wonderful Marilyn Chapman of UBC (and others, of course) in which they continue to promote a play based program in which phonemic awareness is developed through language games (Anna Anna Bobanna is the classic of course). But many teachers come down to teach k. from upper grades and feel they must "look academic" (to parents) (or something!) and so worksheets have become prevalent even when they are not recommended for that age level. Chapman's really great powerpoint presentation of a few years back, re early phonics etc. -- *http://tinyurl.com/c3ydc9b .* I am volunteering for the one-to-one reading program in a school near us. I will put my recommendations that fit what you ask in a separate post because they are a bit lengthy. (I had just written them up regarding one student in particular.) I understand that the emphasis on early reading comes from what happens later down the road -- we have a lot of kids that "get missed" or what have you and lots of early work with phonemic awareness etc. has value. (In other words, these remarks are just my best understanding at this point -- it isn't 'one size fits all'. That's why we say "it's an art AND a science" (teaching). :-) Thanks, Linda Rightmire SD #73 Kamloops, BC On Tue, Nov 20, 2012 at 12:57 PM, Palmer, Jennifer <[email protected] > wrote: > I think sometimes kids do not need more phonics, they need modeling in how > to use the phonics...AND...what to do when phonics doesn't help > them...strategies for using pictures, context etc. > What I used to do is spend time demonstrating what to do when I came to a > word I didn't know...
