A few years ago, there was an excellent article in Reading Teacher about "Poetry Pals" - I've found that my 5th graders enjoy reading poetry (limited choice each week) and love the Poetry Cafe we have at the end of the year - yes it carries over into their reading of fiction and nonfiction text. Some luck with 6 Minute fluency too - they have an intermediate level text.

For progress monitoring I had to record the first trial results, but for the students we would look at growth through the three trials. They could see the goals wcpm and see how much closer they got on their second or third trial. Their scores did go up - even on that first trial. They felt empowered.
