The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI GmbH), with 
sites in
Kaiserslautern, Saarbrücken, Bremen, and Berlin is the leading German 
research
institute in the field of innovative software technology.

DFKI's Language Technology Lab is looking for several energetic 
researchers/senior
researchers to strengthen its team in the area of machine translation, 
with a focus on
hybrid methods combining linguistic and statistical approaches. 
Depending on the
candidate's profile, the position may be located in Saarbrücken or Berlin.

The position will be in the ongoing EU project EuroMatrix Plus (see
www.euromatrixplus.eu for details) or in related research projects 
currently under
preparation. The contract can start in the early 2010 (pending approval 
of funding) and
will be limited to the duration of the respective project, which may be 
up to three years.
Extension of the contract will depend on the acquisition of follow-up 
funding.

Responsibilities include application-oriented research on hybrid MT, MT 
evaluation,
community-based translation environments, learning from multi-parallel 
and comparable
corpora, and related topics, the supervision of student assistants and 
master's theses,
as well as assistance in the conception and acquisition of new research 
projects.

Required experience and qualifications:

   * PhD or MSc/Diploma in computer science or computational linguistics 
with excellent knowledge of machine translation (MT) and/or machine 
learning for natural language  processing.
   * Good programming skills in C, C++, and/or Python, as well as the 
ability to write scientific papers and technical documents.
   * Open-mindedness and the will to collaborate closely within a 
distributed, multidisciplinary team and to engage in EU-wide 
collaborations.
   * Experience with both statistical and grammar-based approaches to MT 
would be highly desirable.
   * Good oral and written command of English is required; familiarity 
with additional EU languages would be a strong plus.
