Wouldn't that mean creating two versions of configure.in? I don't really want 
to maintain that. 

This is a problem that only afflicts older versions of Redhat, and if you're 
on one of those versions (as is our cluster) then I think the best workaround 
is to build your own version of autotools. Or you can install one of the 
pre-packaged versions of moses.
