All I know is that it puts words into classes. I guess that's to reduce data 
sparsity. There's a parameter that defines the number of classes but noone has 
looked into that either.

I suppose you can use other class labels such as pos tags but I haven't heard 
anyone do that

People usually try and replace Giza++ entirely rather tha just bits of it
