Hi,
I found the answer in the paper of Galley and Manning. I've missed some important parts of their paper which explain my questions. Sorry for spamming. I'm a bit lost after hours of skimming through papers. Discontinuous orientation occurs if neither an alignment point to top left nor to the top right in an alignment matrix exists - neither monotone nor swap. That's clear, but when are discontinuous right and left detected? Thanks, Daniel
