I find it a little confusing, when using

ffmpeg_video_codec mpeg4

The motion detection files I get are .avi and when I look into some of the
documentation it says that mp4 files will be output with a .avi

info from here:
http://www.lavrsen.dk/foswiki/bin/view/Motion/ConfigOptionFfmpegVideoCodec

when I try to get these to play in a <video> html tag all I see is a blank
screen. If I put a mp4 file created someplace else it plays fine.

is the mpeg4 "contained" inside another format? avi?

It's AVI container that uses mpeg4 codec. You can't embed that in html
If you want to get MP4 or MKV or whatever container/codec - use ext_pipe
with external encoder.

thanks,

I what I'll do is do a conversion when the image is requested for viewing I
don't need to add the load of extra processes.

What I'm doing is:
/usr/local/bin/ffmpeg -i /motion/8/2015/09/01/23/24/31.avi
/motion/8/2015/09/01/23/24/31.mp4

Which seems to work fine
