I can confirm it was an empty character in one line. Probably " \n"
I dont ktow how and why but I deleted this line and entered new line
[enter] and now it works without any errors.

Thank you.

Me again :(

I bought a new Pi because my old one is only capable of capturing
highish res video at 1 fps. So I've bought a Pi 2 B in the hope that it
will be able to do better. Oh and a new SD card so it's a clean install.

I've built MrDave's latest master and got it compiled and running as a
service (I installed the Pi motion package to get the scripts and
changed the path to the executable). But it's having some difficulty
with the camera, and it's late so I'm having trouble understanding what
I'm doing wrong. Any ideas as to what to do next?

The log says:

and then the last two lines just repeat every ten seconds.

Anybody recognize these symptoms? Or what other information do I need to
supply?

Thanks, Dave

Not much more than the log indicates....It can not find/open the web
camera on /dev/video0 Could look to see that it is listed in the /dev
drive...Try lsusb to show that it reports to the PI2 outside of
motion.... May also want to try motion via command line with sudo
motion first instead of as daemon/service just to make sure that there
aren't any permission issues getting in the way. Probably shouldn't run
permanently as sudo motion but only use that to see if it is permissions.

Doh, thanks. Obvious when you say it. Sadly the next step is still not
obvious to me.

If I run it as root, it seems to start up OK. If I run it as user
motion, it says

[0] [NTC] [ALL] conf_load: Processing thread 0 - config
file /usr/local/etc/motion/motion.conf
[0] [NTC] [ALL] motion_startup: Motion Unofficial-Git-UNKNOWN Started

[1] [NTC] [ALL] motion_init: Thread 1 started , motion detection Enabled

[1] [ALR] [VID] vid_v4lx_start: Failed to open video device /dev/video0:

[1] [WRN] [ALL] motion_init: Could not fetch initial image from camera
Motion continues using width and height from config file(s)

Looking at /dev/video0:

$ ls -l /dev/video0
crw-rw---T 1 root video 81, 0 Jan 1 1970 /dev/video0

and looking in /etc/group:

$ grep motion /etc/group
video:x:44:pi,motion
motion:x:1002:

so I'm not sure why it can't open the device.

Cheers, Dave

Ah, the joys of morning. I needed to restart motion's shell for it to
notice it was in the video group.

Cheers, Dave
